On this day, the Pietermaritzburg-based side secured a hard-fought promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, South Africa’s second-highest football division, completing a memorable journey from the grassroots level of the ABC Motsepe League.

Midlands Wanderers began their campaign by dominating the KwaZulu-Natal stream of the ABC Motsepe League. Their consistency saw them emerge as provincial champions, eventually earning a place in the national playoffs. In the KZN playoff, they defeated Mkhambathi FC 1–0, a crucial step that booked their ticket to the national stage.
Once at the national playoffs, the team found themselves in a competitive group that included Zizwe United and The Bees. All three teams ended up with equal points and similar goal differences, leading to an unusual tiebreaker. A replay was ordered between Midlands Wanderers and Zizwe United, which Midlands won emphatically with a 4–0 scoreline. This dominant win advanced them to the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, the team faced Gomora United. Despite a determined effort, Midlands fell short with a narrow 1–0 loss. Ordinarily, this would have marked the end of their promotion hopes. However, due to league restructuring and an open spot left by Royal AM’s exit from professional football, a third promotion slot became available.

In the third-place playoff, Midlands Wanderers were pitted against Thames FC. This was it—the final shot at promotion. Rising to the occasion, the Wanderers delivered a gritty performance and secured victory, reportedly with a 2–1 scoreline. That win confirmed their elevation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship for the 2025/2026 season.
It was a culmination of talent, perseverance, and strong leadership, with the players and coaching staff demonstrating great resilience throughout the campaign.
